Trash and recycling

The city collects residential trash once a week in a city-owned 96-gallon cart. To start service, call Solid Waste at 918-456-8332; the bill comes through Tahlequah Public Works Authority along with your water and power.

Put the cart within three feet of the curb, no earlier than noon the day before and no later than 5 AM on collection day. There's a 35-pound limit per cart, and a second cart runs $8.25 a month. The office at 1851 N. Douglas Ave. is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4 PM, plus the second Saturday of the month.

Recycling is drop-off only — there's no curbside pickup. The center sits at the south gate of Solid Waste, 1851 N. Douglas Ave., open Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 4 PM. It takes aluminum, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic, magazines, metal, office paper, paper and tin. No tires, wood, concrete, microwaves or oil filters.

Water, electric and gas

Most city addresses get electric, water and sewer from Tahlequah Public Works Authority. Call the business office at 918-456-2564, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, and ask for the Establish Service form. New accounts cost $12 per service for the first trip out, $50 for each additional trip. Outages and after-hours emergencies go to 918-456-3591.

Some addresses, mostly outside the city, are served by Lake Region Electric Cooperative instead. Natural gas comes from NOPFA. If you're not sure which applies to your house, ask the seller, the landlord or the neighbors before you set up accounts.

Car tag and driver's license

Cherokee County Tag Agency, 25 Plaza South, handles state registrations and titles, and a Service Oklahoma employee works there for written and drive tests since the Phoenix Avenue office closed. The number listed for it is 918-453-2889. Nobody publishes its hours — not the agency, not Service Oklahoma, not the chamber — so call before you go.

Cherokee Nation citizens can use the Cherokee Nation Tag Office instead, open Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM to 4 PM, with the last customer taken at 4:15. Its site shows the current wait and how many lines are open, and regular vehicles can renew online.

Library card

Tahlequah Public Library is at 120 S. College Ave., 918-456-2581. Open Monday to Thursday, 9 AM to 8 PM; Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM; Saturday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM; closed Sunday.

A card is free if you live, work, go to school or own property in Adair, Cherokee, Delaware, McIntosh, Muskogee or Sequoyah county. Register in person and bring something with your address on it — a license, a bill, a piece of mail. If you pay property tax in one of those counties but live elsewhere, bring the assessor's bill and it's still free. Otherwise a card is $30.

Enrolling in school

City addresses are in Tahlequah Public Schools: Sequoyah for pre-K, then Cherokee, Greenwood and Heritage elementaries, Tahlequah Middle School, and Tahlequah High School and Central. Enrollment is entirely online through a guardian portal, and you request a login from the enrollment page. Not sure which district your address is in? Call 918-458-4100 and they'll look it up.

Living outside the district but want in? That's an Open Transfer Application, emailed to enrollment@tahlequahschools.org or dropped at the Education Service Center, 100 N. Water Ave. The district posts capacity against actual enrollment for every grade, and plenty of grades sit at zero openings with a waiting list. Requests for the next school year open June 1.

Rural addresses outside the city usually fall to Keys or Hulbert. Sequoyah High School is run by the Cherokee Nation and isn't assigned by where you live.

Registering to vote

You can register any time, but it has to reach the county board at least 25 days before an election to count for that election. Register online through the OK Voter Portal if you have an Oklahoma license or state ID with a signature on file; otherwise use the paper form from the county board.

Parks with playgrounds

The city lists a playground at Norris Park downtown (also restrooms, picnic tables, the Leoser pavilions and a gazebo, and you can reserve it), Sequoyah Park (restrooms, shelter, walking trail), Kaufman Park (pickleball), Felts Park (pavilion), Ross Park, Southridge City Park, and the Anthis-Brennan Family Sports Complex (basketball, pickleball, restrooms).

There is a splash pad in town — the Parks Department shows a photo of it — but the city doesn't say which park it's in, so we're not going to guess. Mission Park and Phoenix Park get named in city text with no page of their own, so what's actually there is anyone's guess. And no source mentions shade at any of them, which in July matters.
